Book Review: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fermenting Foods by Wardeh Harmon

If there is one food subject that really fascinates me, it's fermentation. I have been delving into fermenting different foods for several years now, but certainly have a long way to go before having a full grasp of all that can be done for food preservation through fermentation, along with the great variety of food and drinks that can be prepared.

 
When given the opportunity to review Wardeh Harmon's new book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fermenting Foods, I happily said yes. Wardeh maintains the site GNOWFGLINS. Already one of my favorites to check out for a variety of useful information for making foods from scratch, I just knew her book would be great. She certainly hasn't let me down. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised at just how much detail she included and the full extent of her knowledge.

From the get go, it's easy to read and certainly a perfect book for someone just learning how to start home fermentation, whether they're considering fermenting foods for preservation, for taste or even wanting to try their hands at making there own fermenting drinks like beer. Taking it a step further though, Wardeh dives into the subject deep enough that even someone with more background on the fermentation subject would still enjoy this book from cover to cover.

Consider this book for gifts under the tree and in stockings. Increasing fermented foods in the diet is likely one of the most important steps most people can easily start doing to increase their overall health. Probiotics abound in ferments and allow the gut to better break down foods that the body would otherwise find difficult to digest. There are dozens of diseases and health issues people suffer from that can be corrected by simply healing their gut, which is started by increasing probiotic intake.

Beyond healing the body I would highly recommend checking out The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fermenting Food if you have any interest in learning about how to ferment your own foods. If you aren't interested in learning about this subject, read it anyways, because you might find yourself desiring to prepare and preserve foods in a whole new way.
